I didn't notice that the Republic, or any other news organization, listed the nationality of criminals. Perhaps they should. U.S. Born Asian kills wife and children, Hugarian caught for bank robbery, Indian citizen with expired visa involved in a hit and run. Maybe we should just stop while we're ahead and be satisfied to learn the news.

Racial differentiation among criminals is not ordinarily news, except when the victim is of a certain race and the perp another, or if both are minorities (I'm thinking of the Vietnamese gangs in the East Valley that targeted other Vietnamese for home invasions). A suspect's status as a non-citizen is certainly news. Oh, and "Asian" is not a nationality.

A deadly car wreck is news, but to get "all the news" we like to know if either driver was drunk, and the age and gender and citizenship status of both. And while some people do care about race, the media tries to control our interpretation of events so they often leave it out. I think that's the difference between news and journalism.
